Download Board examination Guide
This document is intended to summarize the most important rights students have when taking exams. If you have any further questions, please contact the Department of Educational Policy ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
The respective legal documents are noted with the regulations, but in only a few cases are they direct citations.
In the case of lectures that are concluded with a single examination (lectures), there must be at least 3 examinations per semester. (§76 UG)
Students of the University of Leoben are entitled to repeat negatively assessed examinations four times (5 examination attempts). The 4th and 5th attempts have to be held by the examination board. ($38 MUL Statutes)
The technical requirements to take the online exam must be announced before the start of the semester. In the event of technical problems that occur through no fault of the student, the examination must be cancelled without crediting the examination attempts. (§76 UG)
If a performance or the registration for an examination was obtained by fraud, the Dean of Studies shall declare the examination null and void. In this case, the examination is still counted as an examination. (§73 UG)
Using unauthorized aids or third parties as support for an examination is to be regarded as faking scientific performance. This also applies to the preparation of written work that is used for assessment.
Absence from the examination without serious reasons will result in suspension from the next examination, if it takes place within 8 weeks from the missed examination. Otherwise, such a suspension is not permitted. (§33 (8) MUL Statutes)
Yes, but only for courses with an immanent examination character (IVs, VUs, exercises). A maximum of 80% attendance may be required. (§16 MUL statutes)
The registration for an exam must end at the earliest 1 week before the exam. In most cases, however, it is still possible to register at the secretary's office of the chair.
Deregistration from an exam is permitted until 11:00 a.m. on the day before the exam and must also be done at the secretary's office. (§33 MUL Statutes)
Exam dates and assessment criteria must be announced before the start of the semester. In most cases, these can be found in the course information in MU-Online. (§76 UG)
With the students' consent, short-term appointments are also possible. (§33 (7) MUL Statutes)
There are hardly any legal remedies against the assessment of an examination. In the case of serious deficiencies in the assessment, one can apply to the dean of studies for the cancellation of the examination. This request does not count as a permissible request for an examination (§79 UG).
Oral examinations are open to the public, so you may take someone with you to the examination. In addition, students who are assessed negatively must be provided with a written explanation upon request. (§79 UG)
Within 6 months, students have the right to inspect. This includes both the questions asked and the answers. Students are entitled to duplicate (photograph) these examination documents, both questions and answers. This does not apply to multiple choice questions and their answers. (§79 UG)
The STEOP are part of all bachelor studies. They consist of at least 2 courses with a total of 8-20 ECTS. Until the STEOP exams are completed, a certain number of ECTS from non-STEOP lectures may be completed. The information on how many ECTS these are can be found in the curriculum. In most cases it is 22 ECTS.
A board examination takes place in front of a board of examiners. This consists of two examiners and one chair. In the case of an oral exam, this means that the exam is not held in front of one person but in front of a board. In the case of a written exam, this means that the exam is corrected independently by at least two persons.
The 4th attempt is not necessarily in front of a commission if the exam is not conducted in the form of a single examination. This can be the case, for example, with exercises or IVs.
The 4th attempt is taken at the respective chairs. It can be done in writing and/or orally. Registration is done directly with the chair using application forms that are available in the respective secretariats. The registration period is 3 weeks and a deregistration is possible for oral exams or written and oral exams up to one week before and for written examinations up until 11 a.m. on the last working day before the examination day.
In the case of courses with immanent examinations, a board examination does not necessarily have to take place; in this case, the 4th attempt runs in the same way as the previous attempts.
Some departments/institutes (e.g. chemistry) offer a pre-exam before the board-examination. Some institutes offer special revision courses for which you can register in MUonline. Please inquire about such offers at the respective institutes and get in touch with your examiner (if possible BEFORE registering for the exam).
In contrast to the 4th attempt, the 5th and final attempt always includes an oral part, which will be taken in front of an examination board in the office of the Dean of Studies. The application forms are available in the office of the Dean of Studies. The registration period is 3 weeks and cancellation is possible up to one week before the examination.
In the case of courses with immanent examinations, the examination senate must be provided with a record of the student's performance in the course (i.e. tests, laboratory protocols, etc.) for evaluation. In addition, there is an oral part in front of the examination board.
Some departments/institutes (e.g. chemistry) offer a preliminary examination before the start of a board examination. Some institutes organize special repetition courses for which you can register in MUonline. Please inquire about such offers at the respective institutes and get in touch with your examiner (if possible BEFORE registering for the exam).
If the 5th attempt is evaluated negatively, the student will be exmatriculated from the study program, i.e. the admission to the program expires and the study program and other studies that include this course as a compulsory subject in the curriculum cannot be completed.
