Kurzfassung (eng): | From a financing perspective, mining projects differ in many respects from other industrial projects. One key feature relates to the finite nature of the deposit and thus the time limit. While an industrial site can be secured for the long term with the help of material procurement and purchasing, the deposit of a mining project diminishes as mining progresses. However, this does not pose a particular problem for financing. Much more important is the often very long lead time with several preparatory phases: Prospecting, exploration, construction and installation of the mining equipment, test for commissioning until finally the extraction can start. It is precisely during these preparatory phases that the need for financing increases steadily and usually reaches its greatest extent shortly before production begins. Over this entire period, often longer than a decade, no revenue is generated that can be used for interest payments and repayment of loans. There are no profit distributions anyway. The question therefore arises as to how these preparatory phases are financed. Who participates as an investor? What types of financing are available? What conditions are determined? How are these conditions calculated and evaluated? What are the terms? How does a mining project present itself as "attractive" to investors? How is the effectiveness of an investment measured when there are zero revenues and loss records? The lecture cannot answer all these and other questions, and certainly not in their entirety. Nevertheless, participants will get an insight into the special financial world around mining based on a case study of a mining project. |
CV (eng): | Jan C. Bongaerts is Professor Emeritus of Environmental and Resource Management at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. During his active time until April 2017, he was dean of the MBA International Management of Resources and Environment program and thus jointly responsible for the academic education of numerous international students. He continues to serve the university as a consultant for international projects, including EURECA-PRO, the European University Alliance for Responsible Consumption and Production. He is involved in an international project to establish and further develop a Montan Institute at Taita Taveta University in Kenya. Under the name CEMEREM (Centre of Excelllence for Mining, Environmental Engineering and Resource Management) it is one of the DAAD Centres of African Excellence. He still holds a few lectures, one of which is on the subject of financing mining projects. |
